With the advent of electricity we humans got our first taste of pushing a button and making something happen. It was the kind of magic power that our forefathers could only dream of having. Now we take it for granted and so we have arrived at a point where we expect everything to be immediately accessible. To me this progress demonstrates evolution.

Think about it. What has been the evolutionary goal of humanity’s progress so far? Hasn’t it been to make things easier? And what does making things easier really mean? It means we have less need to deal with physical reality. We are progressing then from a state of body to a state of spirit.

In the spirit world, every intention is instantaneously accomplished because we are living in a world of thought. Thought is clean. There are no messes to mop up afterwards. There are no physical components which need to be rearranged, only energy. Of course food is unnecessary on this level because we don’t have bodies to feed but if we did need to eat, we would think of what we were in the mood for, and then it would be dished up to us. We could even think we have eaten already and then we wouldn’t even have to conjure up a thought of food at all. Compare the ease of this scenario to the original effort required to kill an animal or forage for a plant, prepare either one, and then clean up the mess. I heartily endorse option one and I think that would be true of anyone.

The reason we would choose something easier is because we are by nature somewhat lazy and we welcome any opportunity to get out of exerting ourselves on a physical plane. Where do you suppose this laziness is coming from? I believe it is coming from our innate desire to metamorphose from a hulking mindless body to streamlined bodiless mind. Now that is what I call evolution.

Enter the computer. For people who like to live in their minds and not have to go through all the work of living bodily, it is a perfect solution and also a major stride toward our pre-programmed destiny. It may take thousands and thousands of years to get there but gradually we are making our way back to the world of thought which is in fact the spirit world. How we got bumped into the caveman state is a matter of speculation and is the foremost reason for coming up with a religion. The important news though, is the fact that gradually we are returning back to pure energy. We are returning to our original condition and we are going home.

Think about how computer interactions propel us toward the spirit state. We can look for jobs, have relationships, travel, shop, see a doctor, mail a letter, attend church, do research, (remember the days of the card catalogue?) without having to drag our bodies around. Think about how wisdom teeth are becoming obsolete because we don’t have to gnaw on things so viciously to make them digestible. Well, the same goes for any of these other activities. We can fully respond, learn, obtain, relate, communicate, socialize, worship and even make a living on the computer. We can digest all the necessary essentials of a fulfilled life experience but we just don’t have to chew so hard.

The less we exert our flesh in order to live a satisfying life, the more we approach a world of pure energy. Computer living is like flying because we defy gravity. To me, that is always a good thing.

Human Resources is a lovely discipline occupied by thousands of wonderfully insightful intelligent people. Formally, the field is referred to as Industrial/Organizational Psychology (or the name on your degree). The science behind Human Resources aims to make organizations more productive while ensuring productive and healthy lives for its workers. Translation: workers happy, company thrives. They even used to call it PERSONnel!
<br />But then the HR folks wanted a part of the technological revolution and they upgraded themselves in a big way. A marriage formed between HR + IT and it formed a whole new world (HRIS). But somehow the technology tornado swept through and sucked the Human out of Human Resources.

The HR departments are no longer filled with “people people.” Instead, the pressure to keep up with the Technology Jonses has forced traditional HR folks into bits and bytes decoders.

Back in the day … and by back in the day, I mean back in the day when I first graduated college (1996), I was still thinking about the quality of paper upon which I printed my resume. I wore a navy suit with pantyhose and pumps. I carried a leather portfolio and sent a handwritten thank you note.

Today our job hunt begins and ends with the computer; it is our porthole into the market. We log on to let the world know that we’re looking. We have to be our own email marketers and drive our own viral campaigns. We network online, we apply online, we click to send our saved resumes and the upload yet another cover letter. We always email to follow up. We summarize decades of experience with a maximum number of characters and we send it out into the online abyss.

I worked at a recruitment advertising agency for 7 years so you figure I’d be able to navigate some sort of back end armed with the inside scoop. Wrong. Turns out I don’t have the formula any more than anyone else does.

Most large companies have applicant tracking systems (ATS), which are databases designed to hold and process the millions of resumes. When you are applying to a job online or via email, your resume is automatically going into this database. Often you may be applying to a position that isn’t even available; the company just wants to build a “pipeline” of candidates.

When the company is ready to hire someone, the first order of business is to have the HR folks search through this ATS. The hiring manager provides the HR person with cryptic keywords and then they go into the massive database, laden with millions of our career histories and conducts a keyword search. Code given, code entered, resumes served.

If you know the correct code that will yield your resume, hurray for you. The rest of us better figure out the code. The current economy means companies can get the best bang for their buck; employees come cheap. It’s the simple principle of supply and demand.

When I worked for the recruitment advertising agency, my clients often wanted me to advertise hard-to-fill jobs on very obscure Websites. One client was seeking a highly specialized nurse. The position was so distinct – there was only 18 known practitioners in the country. I thought a better approach would be to call the 18 nurses and give them a personal pitch. The client preferred to psychologically guess which Websites they might be visiting. In this instance, technology brainwashed (and trumped) the human.

The online job-hunting marketplace has gotten so overwhelming, they created a search engine to further simplify the process. Or so you think. These one-stop shops (like Indeed and Simply Hired) let you enter a title and a location and voila – jobs at a click. But how many of these jobs are legit?

It’s often the same job on different sites. The job boards have gotten very nepotistic and have created relationships and partnerships all over the place. When a company advertises on one site, they get a dozen others as a bonus. What this means for a job hunter is same job, different www.

Oh the online forms! Some of the big sites like Monster and CareerBuilder let you store your resume and apply to jobs with a click. Many of the large companies mandate you fill out their own profiles on their company’s career page. Fun!

You cruise around the Fortune 500 Online world filling out forms ad nauseam. Hours of virtual paperwork to earn some space on a database. You spend countless clicks inputting your life into online boxes. You indicate your gender, your nationality, if you’re a veteran. Have you ever been convicted of a crime? Have you ever worked here before? Sometimes the experience will lend itself to a little “pre-screen” interaction where they give you a series of questions and you click off some buttons answering what they want to see. You customize a cover letter with their words.

I feel ahead of the game. The older generation is at a disadvantage in this technologically dominated new job-hunting universe. It is not enough to maintain expertise in your profession of choice; you also have to be proficient in navigating the Web 2.0 and Social Media world. Without it, you might not stand a fighting chance.

But for the thousands of those currently unemployed, they should use the technology rather than compete with the technology. Candidates have to be louder than the technology. They have to integrate a little human back into the mix.

If you find yourself enthralled in a slightly older school of job hunting, you may find yourself busting out the suit, pumps and folios and doing the headhunter dance. That scenario usually plays itself out like so:

You find a job online and apply for it, often unknowing that you’re really applying to a headhunter. Said headhunter will call you and ask you a series of questions and then hopefully deem you worthy of an in-person interview. When you come in for your in-person, you use your tiniest handwriting to fill out a 10-page archaic paper application. This is the exact same content you filled in when you sent in the “application” online. You wait to be called and then get escorted into a cubicle conference room. There you make small talk and answer the same questions the headhunter asked you over the phone. This time they write it down. They put it in a file with your name on it. They tell you all about their unparalleled opportunities. They direct you to complete the online application at home. The say they’ll be in touch. Sometimes they are.

… And that’s what happens when you add the human element.

One of the essential needs of mankind (other than food, clothing, and shelter) is entertainment. We have had many forms of entertainment since the dawn of the human race such as dancing, singing, chanting, and acting. Many of these forms of entertainment have become traditions to many cultures from across the globe. No matter what taste a society may have, they have their own form of entertainment.

People have been playing games for many reasons; some of them are to relieve them of boredom, others to escape the harsh realities of life, and some to simply relax. Regardless of what reasons they have, games have been played by everyone. The evolution of video games has come hand in hand with technological advances that may or may not be directly involved with them. We have come a long way since the days of Pac Man and Space Invader. One discipline that has helped the development of video games has been computer Networking.

Computer Networking

This is the act of connecting computers or a network of them together. This can be the connection of computers and other devices. We see this through connecting devices such as modems, webcams, fax machines, and printers to our computers.

LAN

A local area network connects computers within a room, house, or building. Gamers have experienced the advantages of playing video games that utilize computer networking. Multiplayer games such as first person shooters, real-time strategy games, and racing games have been popular amongst gamers. They have been able to play on computers that are connected, and are able to interact with each other within the game. This has made video games an increasingly social activity, unlike before when people would just play by themselves, or with just one other player at a time. With a local area network, 10-20 players are able to engage in a game at the same time.

Online games

It’s quite obvious that the Interne has forever changed the way we interact with each other. So much information can be found on the Internet, and an endless number of activities are available online as well. A lot of games nowadays are “playable” online. For this reason, gamers are able to interact with other players from all across the globe. You could be living in Ohio and be playing a shooting game with someone from Barcelona. This also spawned a new game genre called massively multiplayer online role-playing games.

More popularly known as MMORPGs, massively multiplayer online role-playing games have become really popular amongst kids, teens, and adults of all ages. It allows players to go around in a virtual world and develop a particular character. The great thing about it is that thousands of players from around the world could be playing in the same game with you at the same time. You would be able to interact with these players by trading items, dueling, teaming-up, or simply just chatting.

Computer Networking has been developing at a rapid rate, and more advancement in gaming are sure to come. All you have to do is sit back and enjoy the ride.

Science Fiction movies have always been a medium for speculation about the future of technology. The most visible part of technology often is its interaction design, which therefore appears prominently in these movies. This video presents a survey of human-computer interaction designs in SciFi movies during the past decades and it relates the techniques shown there to existing technologies and prototypes in research. Different types of interaction are categorized according to their …
Help answer the question about Human Computer Interaction
simple explanation about human computer interaction?
can you people please explain to me whats human computer interaction? no computer terms or jargon, just a normal explanation what is it. thanks

When looking at HCI, research will be done to help give DOTNUTSHELL a better understanding as to what aspects need to be taken into consideration when designing eCan ecommerce. It is essential for software development. This is what will be researched and taken into consideration:

Disabilities

Visual

Errors

Administration

Usability

Disabilities are spilt into “Cognitive, perceptual and physical impairments (PIs)”. These disabilities “can all hinder the use of computing technologies”.

“Aging can have substantial effects on cognitive ability”. This can be influenced by perceptual and physical impairments. Human beings can suffer mild impairment which will not affect their ability to use programs. Some suffer from a combination of impairments, though mild, can cause problems. The problem this causes is that not all problems can be catered for. Cognitive decline can be aided by designing systems to “allow every step to be carried out at the user’s own pace”, primarily defines the old from the young as additional time to complete tasks is required by older people as their cognitive functions have declined over time.

Attention is another cognitive impairment can be caused by aging, immaturity, emotional problems and genetics. To minimise attention problems here is “to grab the users’ attention” by highlighting critical information appropriately, to keep the interest of the user. Memory loss and Dementia is another to be taken into consideration. “Limitation in memory affects people with age and non-age related cognitive impairment” wherever feasible, designs need to be carefully planned and implemented to minimise “the burden of memory off the user” by the use of “prompts and reminders” and navigation. One of the largest causes of dementia is Alzheimer’s Disease and strokes.

Visuospatial, Iconic and Verbal Abilities are another three cognitive types that needs to be considered. Other than memory there is marked “decline in visuospatial and verbal abilities in older people” causing difficulty with layout, organisation, iconic memory and limitations in verbal ability, these symptoms are apparent in Autism affecting people of all ages. So we will take in to consideration by the layout and text. Designs could well be put in place with thorough research aid people with strokes, but with Alzheimer’s it would be very difficult in the long term as the condition gets progressively worse over time.

Perceptual impairment is split in to “hearing impairments, mental impairments, speech impairments and visual impairments”.

Hearing is “constantly fluctuating air pressure” and is converted in the form of “pitch, timbre and loudness” this is done through the three parts of the ear, outer, middle and inner. Pitch is measured against the “frequency of a pure tone” or the “frequency of a complex tone”. Human beings are more sensitive to frequencies, ranging from 1000 Hz to 5000 Hz, the ability to hear any frequencies higher or lower than this deteriorate with age.

Timbre “is the sensation closely related to the quality of sound”. As everyday sounds are very complex, the quality of the sound becomes very important. This allows can allow someone to judge the same note played by a different instrument, or even if the volume of a sound system has been slightly. Loudness is the “intensity of the sound” measured in decibels (dB). The loudest sound level that can be heard without any long term damage being caused to the ear is 120 dB, but what is being heard is related to the frequency of the sound. Hearing is the combination of pitch, timbre and hearing, any problems with any of the elements of hearing can cause confusion or an incorrect conclusion on what is being heard. Any sounds that may be used will be simple and very different to each other.

Mental impairments such dyslexia and autism can cause difficulty. Dyslexics can have difficulties with information relayed textually. But speech can “alleviate the need to read and write and allow more accurate input and output” in very severe cases, but with less severe cases “spelling correction programs” can help, the spell check facilities similar to those used in Ms Word would not be considered to be of any use as it does not “recognise their idiosyncratic word construction methods” or even minor displacement of characters in words. Which also affects the way dyslexics read as they will perceived some words to be incorrectly spelt as confusion can occur with similar words.

Sufferers of autism have their “ability to communicate and interact with people around them and to make sense of their environment” affected, manifesting itself primarily in three ways social interaction, communication and imagination. To aid in the use of the e-shop in a can text will be kept simple and easy to read, and if possible speech output will be also be integrated, but any sever cases will be very difficult to cater for.

Speech is “the oral expression of language”, this impairment is something that will not be catered by a design independently, and the speech system provided in Windows if feasible will be used for speech. Visual impairment has attracted a lot of attention in research as it is seen as potentially “one of the most debilitating” impairments. Due to the rise in GUI systems there has been a reduction in “possibilities for visually impaired users”, to aid users with “text-based interaction, screen readers using synthesized speech or Braille output devices” have been used, though such devices are very restricted in trying to interpret the graphical interface. Colour also needs to be considered, colours used have to be as distinct as possible, and it should not be affected by contrast.

Physical impairments require adaptive interfaces to allow users to actually use a computer system correctly, as this is not something that will be considered in the design as it cannot be catered for by software, as this is more a hardware related issue.

Cultural impact on colours also needs to be considered “blue should not be used to display critical information”, also as approximately 10% of the population is colour blind “being unable to discriminate between red and green” it is very important that use of these colours is kept to a minimum unless absolutely necessary. Screen resolutions will also need to be taken into consideration as the visually impaired may have low resolution set on the VDU so there is not point in creating a layout which will need a high resolution setting.

Errors are a very important part of the final design, the final product itself will need to work without errors but it must be capable of alerting the user of any errors they have made, this will need to be covered by validation within the design of the e-shop in a can. There could be actual prompts to alert the user, or sounds such as beeps or an alarm. Or even a traffic light system red, yellow and green, red for danger, yellow for caution and green to continue. But before anything like this can be implemented impairments will have to be taken into consideration. We must also plan and design for errors so that even if the user makes a mistake, validations and function have to be put into place so that the user will do the right thing.

Administration cannot be too complicated with the e-shop in a can, as the added complication will mean it will take longer to get full working knowledge and understanding of how the whole system has to work. There will have to be full security access in the initial layout setup of the e-shop in a can, easy access and manipulation of the data in the database that will be used.

Usability is “how easy it is to learn and use a system”. This is something that should be central to the design and development of any product. In usability every aspect of product needs to be taken into consideration. From the way it looks to the naked eye, to the way it works. For the e-shop in a can colours and layout will have to be considered, then there is also navigation. Things that need to be taken into consideration consist of the time taken or needed to complete tasks, how often the user will have to repeat the same procedure, the time user may spend dealing with errors. These are important for the end consumer and the administration. Any final visual effects that might be implemented, will have to be within any safety and legal regulations.
